Chris Anderson, 30, and Jack Griffith, 17, amazed judges and thrilled the crowds with their flying skills. Chris was awarded first place in the Short Take-Off Landing microlight category, as well as a certificate for ‘Most Committed’ and ‘Shortest Overall Takeoff’. He was competing in his Zenith CH701 which he had flown less than 10 hours in, and says it was his passion and determination to win that got him through. “The aircraft was built for this type of flying. He managed an incredible distance of 0.0, landing exactly on the line which put him in first place in the ‘Precision Landing’ category. According to Craig, it was an amazing result. “Here we have a young kid with virtually no time under his belt and he has beaten people who have flown more than 30,000 hours, it was a great result for him,” he says. Police investigating piggery attack

James Franken, 5, had a special journey to his first day of school this week, after being driven to St Mary’s School in a fire truck. James was the winner of a radio competition run by More FM for a week before school began.

Blenheim Police are investigating an incident at a Grovetown piggery in the early hours of January 31, which resulted in two pigs receiving serious injuries and the disappearance of another pig. A neighbour reported hearing a diesel vehicle enter the property during the night, followed by loud squealing from the pigs. In the morning it was discovered one pig was missing and two other pigs had serious cuts to their bodies. It is not clear whether those pigs will survive. Police would like to hear from anyone who has information regarding the person responsible, and the fate of the third pig.

Charlotte finds home By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim woman is thankful after she and her children found a home to live in earlier this week. As reported in the Sun on Friday Charlotte Waara and her four children, aged six to 15, had been living at a motor camp, costing them over $1000 a week, after the contract on their rental house expired. Now, they have found a four-bedroom home in Springlands, and will move in later this week. In response to the Sun’s story several people phoned in to enquire about the situation and to offer accommodation. Charlotte says the couple who owned the home were very generous. “They took the house off the market for us. “She was reading the paper at the same time as he was reading it and she said ‘what do you reckon?” She says the couple gave her the keys after she visited the home for a viewing on Friday night, and they will move in later this week, when the power is reconnected. The home is close to both schools the four girls attend. On Friday, marae members from the Wairau Pa contacted Charlotte, and she and her family

CBD MEETINGS Public meetings on the CBD revitalisation in Blenheim and Picton are scheduled to take place later this month. The Blenheim meeting will be held on February 17 at the Marlborough Convention Centre, and the Picton meeting is the next night at the Port Marlborough Pavilion at Endeavour Park. Both meetings will run from 5pm-7pm.

moved in temporarily that evening. Charlotte says she has had other families around the area commenting on how brave she was. “They’ve been saying they’re in similar situ-

ations themselves. “I want to thank the public who answered my call. It’s good to see there are people out there with the heart to give a family like ours a chance.”

Tough time for renters By Adam Poulopoulos Renters are feeling the pressure with the availability of rental homes falling in Marlborough. According to in-house statistics compiled by Mark Stevenson First National Real Estate, the number of rental properties available across all agents for Marlburians dropped from 101 on January 10, 2014, to 68 at the same time this year. The Marlborough region includes listings in Blenheim, Picton, the Marlborough Sounds, Renwick Seddon and Kaikoura. Properties in Blenheim more

than halved in the same time frame, with 68 available in 2014 and 32 this year.

Mark Stevenson senior property manager Mariette Knudsen says it is affecting renters around the region. “I’ve had two ladies in tears in the office this week because I couldn’t offer them anything. “For every vacant property there are 10 suitable applicants.” Knudsen says this year’s startof-year rental period is one of the toughest she has seen during her 16 years in the job. However, she says the shortage is indicative of a cyclical trend. “It’s a good time to be a landlord.

Two Blenheim men charged with Crimes Act offences in relation to a multi-million dollar gaming machine fraud had their first hearing in the Wellington District Court on Monday. Michael Joseph O’Brien, 55, and Patrick Francis O’Brien, 80, are two of a group of four men charged with obtaining by deception. The men are scheduled to appear again on March 20.

VILLA MARIA CONCERT MOVED “Usually at the end of November and December it’s quiet, but from the second week of January until the end of February it goes mad. “This time last year a man accepted a job here, but had to go back up north because he couldn’t find a home to live in.” She says the market is “all swings and roundabouts.” “During the recession we couldn’t give them away. ”We were offering one week’s free rent to try and entice people.” Knudsen says she expects the current shortage to ease in early March.

Marlborough’s Villa Maria winery will not be hosting a leg of The Winery Tour this year. A spokesperson for CRS Music Management, the group that organises the event, says the attendance at Villa Maria over the past three years has not been enough to cover the cost of producing this show, and that they may look again at Blenheim as a concert venue in future years. This year’s tour began in Tauranga last month, and finishes in Waipara on February 28. Neudorf Vineyards near Nelson are hosting the event on February 26 and 27.

Recycling plan successful so far

Welcome to the WELCOME TO THE SOCIETY Cancer CANCER Society MARLBOROUGH Marlborough

By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough District Council’s recycling trials in smaller communities have resulted in increased overall tonnages, and council will now discuss whether to make them a permanent fixture. Council’s two recycling containers have been rotated between Renwick, Grovetown, Spring Creek, Tua Marina, Rapaura and Rarangi since May last year to provide easier access for those further away from the Blenheim Transfer Station. The findings, including cost figures, will be presented to council at their meeting on February 19, when the proposal to make them permanent will be considered for council’s long-term plan. If the proposal is accepted the public will have the chance to offer feedback. If it is given the green light, bins will be placed at all six centres on a permanent basis from July 1. The suspension of irrigation water supplies to some parts of Marlborough has begun, as the continuing hot, dry weather takes its toll on water levels. Marlborough District Council’s water scientists report that wells are approaching some of the lowest groundwater levels they have seen at some of their monitoring sites. Council advised Wairau Valley property owners with Class B water consents, including those on the Southern Valleys Irrigation Scheme, their consents were shut off from yesterday, while Waihopai Class B consents were suspended last week. The shutdown has come earlier than last season. MDC hydrologist Val Wadsworth says

there is no doubt conditions are the driest in a long time. “The records show the July-December rainfall for Blenheim was the lowest in 85 years, and while some inland areas have fared a bit better, there has not really been any useful rain since December. “The two rivers are likely to reach the thresholds being seen at this time during the big drought of 1973.” Significant rainfall is required before the water supplies can be reinstated. With little prospect of significant rain in the coming weeks, Class A consents may be affected. A decision on Waihopai class A consent holders would be made next week.

McNeil says feedback has been positive. “The main call we’ve had is when we’ve lifted away the bin to empty it. People have been asking ‘is it coming back?’ “We’ve got to make sure we get the right amount of containers to make it work. We need those spare bins.” Tonnage at the transfer station has not dropped, but more recycling, especially cardboard, had been received overall. McNeil says the convenience of the bins had seen more people do more recycling than they would usually do. The bins are currently at Renwick and Rarangi, where they will stay until the end of June. Between mid-November and the end of the year 18.85 tonnes was received at the Renwick bin, and 4.4t at the Rarangi bin.

MDC hydrologist Val Wadsworth says on average, Class B consents are shut off for about a week a year, while Class A consents are suspended once every five years. Elsewhere, household hosing restrictions remain in place for Renwick and Picton. The water quality in the Essons dam is falling due to reduced water flow, while no improvement has been seen in aquifer levels in Renwick. Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney says Renwick’s increased water restrictions were likely in Renwick if the situation deteriorated further.

Sounds Air service launched Sounds Air launched its new air service between the Kapiti Coast and Blenheim with a flight last Friday. The service will run three times a day during the working week, and once on Sundays. Sounds Air purchased a 12-seat Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft from an American air force training establishment in Oklahoma late last year, in preparation for the service’s launch. Sounds Air managing director Andrew Crawford says while the service is being offered to Marlburians, it makes travel easier for a large market at the other end, with 120,000 people living within 30 minutes of Kapiti Coast Airport in Paraparaumu. “A lot of them don’t want to drive to Wellington. It’s a long way to go. “By offering the service that’s a two-to three-hour round trip saved.”

New signage the way forward By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough man says less confusing signage is a way to improve driving conditions around a dangerous Blenheim intersection. Peter Garnett has been taking family and friends to and from the airport for several years, often going through the Old Renwick Road/Jacksons Road intersection to do so. On Jacksons Road, 200 metres either side of the intersection, signs are in place warning motorists they have to stop. Peter says they would work, but not enough people know what they mean. “I surveyed 18 people of different nationalities, and only two of them knew what it meant. “One guessed, and one thought they’d seen it somewhere else. The majority didn’t have a clue.” He says the signs would be

confusing for tourists. “You’ve got dozens of people taking rental cars from the airport doing the tourist thing. “They’ve got no idea to stop until they get to the intersection. “I think it’s quite irresponsible.” Peter says he has only seen the type of sign in two other places – Spring Creek and Hanmer Springs. He says putting up large signs displaying the message ‘Dangerous intersection. Stop in 200 metres’ would be more effective. The intersection has been the site of two fatal collisions in recent years. In one incident, in 2007, a British tourist was killed when the campervan he was in collided with a pickup truck carrying a boat. In total, the New Zealand Transport Authority recorded 14 collisions at the intersection

between 2005 and 2014, with the 2014 data being provisional. Marlborough Roads highway manager Frank Porter says the signs in question are in standard use around the country. “We’ve had issues in the past with vehicles failing to stop on Jacksons Road, so advance signage reinforces that need.” As well as erecting the signs, the Marlborough District Council purchased land on Old Renwick Road and moved trees to create better sight lines for drivers. Currently, an application for NZTA funding is in place which, if approved, will allow right-turn bays to be installed on Old Renwick Road.

Dog attack sparks call to watch out for penguins An appeal has gone out to the public to watch out for Little Blue Penguins and keep their dogs under control after one was recently attacked by a dog. Nicknamed ‘Little Rover’, the juvenile female was dropped off at EcoWorld Picton Aquarium by a farmer whose dog had baled up the penguin as it sought refuge on land while moulting. Little Rover is halfway through her moult. This is when adult and juvenile birds return to nest on land for two to three weeks while old feathers fall out and new ones grow. The moult is the most vulnerable time for penguins as they are stuck on the land and can’t eat, and while fasting their bodies puff up and they get very dehydrated and malnourished. “The woman was just relieved to drop the bird off with us and get it into safe hands,” said EcoWorld’s

Shoes & Accessories

www.tangosshoes.co.nz

Life Science manager Regan Russell. “The Little Blue doesn’t seem to have any bite injuries from the dog but it was pretty none responsive when we got it. It has improved a bit but is still not the best.” “To be honest I did not think she was going to make it. She was so skinny and malnourished and very lethargic and she is still real skinny. We have called her Little Rover. She is beginning to pick up on her appetite, up to eight slices of NZ King Salmon a day. The good news is we gave her her first swim on Monday and things are beginning to look up,” said Regan. She’s is however still not feisty at all which is not such a good sign. She just does not have the strength or attitude, yet. It will come we hope.” It is moult time for penguins and more injured and sick penguins are expected at EcoWorld. If you find a sick or injured Penguin please contact EcoWorld Picton Aquarium or your local DOC office for advice. Take care Penguins are wild animals and they do bite.

Pauline’s poppies By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim rest home has been contributing to Bupa New Zealand’s 5000 Poppies campaign, with one resident particularly enthusiastic. Waterlea Rest Home residents have knitted over 300 poppies for the project, with Pauline Haines creating about 250 of them. Pauline says when she started knitting in June, she thought the number of poppies requested was high.

“I’ve kept at it and tried to do about two a day. “I think I’ve done 250 plus.” With the rest home running out of wool, volunteers, staff and residents have raided their supplies to contribute to the project. Pauline says it takes, on average, about an hour to knit one poppy. She knits 10 red flowers before adding 10 of the black centres. Originally, Bupa rest home residents

around the country were tasked with knitting 5000 poppies to mark the 100th anniversary of New Zealand’s involvement in World War One, but the project has now been extended to 18,500 poppies, one for every New Zealand soldier slain in the Great War. The poppies are being sent away in the next week, and will form part of a display in the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, in Christchurch.

Absolutely. It’s cheaper than everyday clothes. I buy them second-hand and pass them down.

No. Nobody likes wearing them. They’re really uncomfortable.

Yeah. It saves a little bit of grief from keeping up with the fashion.

I think they should be kept on if possible. It’s like a uniform for anything - it gives them an identity.

Yes. I think it means parents don’t have to worry about the cost of what kids are wearing. It’s cheaper in the long-run.

Letters to the editor

Traffic Revenue Dear Ed, The traffic cops have it all wrong. They’re hassling safely driving citizens over a few measly kilometres per hour over limits when there’s money for jam at roundabouts and intersections. In the last week, I’ve seen numerous motorists yakking on their cell phones. One idiot came from Picton on the state highway no indicator going and turned into Rapaura Road, I suggest traffic officers instead of lazily sitting in a car in Lee Street by Dillon Street intersection should get out and be proactive. Just standing with a good digital camera capturing both number plate, time and idiot on phone would get necessary details. I have seen numerous examples of inconsiderate driving between Blenheim and Spring Creek. A few days ago, there was a guy doing 55-58 km/hour in a 100km/hour zone, with a long queue behind him, not pulling over? Or same day the car load of half drunk(?) squealing teenage girls erratically driving, frustrating cars behind by Grovetown? TF40.

re: Stop over using water Dear Ed, I am also a Renwick resident and I do have a greenish garden, despite the majority in my street looking brown. This is not from over using water, but through proactive gardening. I mulch my lawn when I cut it, don’t spray out the clover as it stays green even in dry conditions, cut my lawn to a longer length, and have mature trees which provide shade for the grass. I do water my garden occasionally, but this is kept to a minimum and within council guidelines. Please don’t assume that if a garden looks green it is through using lots of watering, it could be due to time and effort put in by the owners using other gardening methods. Green fingers

Hero’s charge Dear Ed, What a sightful advertisement showing on TV at the moment. Skeletons walking and being destroyed. Little children will be frightened. Why have such an awful ad anyway? Kathy Warren

State Highway

Water down the drain Dear Ed, Thank you for making the issue of water conservation your main feature and for interviewing Cynthia Brooks about it - more notice is taken of someone in authority. We are not as conscientious as the Brookses but store rain water, have buckets under our sink taps, hand water, irrigate using town supply water minimally, wouldn’t even consider a timer, have brown lawns and a grass verge made colourful with beautiful weeds. It enrages me when I see town supply water going down those kerb-side blue fish-labelled drains. To think school kids paved the way only to have adults, often those with the ‘flash’ places, flout their request for ‘only rainwater’. If only to stop that ignorant, arrogant wastage, Blenheim, too, needs water restrictions, M.D.C. arvensis

Stacey Smith Blenheim They still have a place but they’re expensive and kids have normal clothes, so it’s cheaper for them to wear those.

Re: Charlotte Waara Dear Ed, I am writing in response and support for Charlotte and her family. Two years ago I was regarded as homeless. I lived in the Taylors Reserve for five days, sleeping in the shelter of a harakeke bush. I went to WINZ and explained my situation and they were kind enough to assist me with allowing me accommodation for two nights at a backpackers. I then had to go up to the North Island to stay with my mother who is 80 and on a living alone pension. I was told by my mother I could not stay with her on a long term basis because she would lose her accommodation allowance. I returned to Marlborough and approached Age Concern who in the long-term could not help me. I tried HNZ and they put me on a long waiting list. Clarry McMurray Marlborough Resident

Fix Grove Road Dear Ed, Now that the roundabouts are being attended to, how about a move to fix the grid lock in Grove Road? Some user friendly towns have a truck bypasses. Why not here? We are told there is a larger ferry starting in July. The news item stated it will carry double the number of trucks and cars than the old ferry. That will be fun, especially during hoildays! Clarkie

Dear Ed, I noticed there is to be spending on Marlborough’s state highways but no mention of the need for a state highway diversion or bypass, to the east of Blenheim. Why the dithering? Why the blind eyes of local council to the obvious need? Perhaps our new MP, Mr Smith can take up the cause and rattle a few cages? W. N.

Eco system collapse Dear Ed, I agree with KMW’s and Tony Orman’s concerns on the environment and the ecosystem. I can add a few others - the starling flights of old, blowflies (yes blowflies!), eels in streams and rivers. It might well be a “cocktail of chemicals”. Look at all the detergents we now use and they all go down the drain to “somewhere”perhaps rivers, streams, and into the soil. Yes DOC should be concerned. So should the council, Ministry for the Environment, Fish and Game and so on. I might add to DOC’s responsibility, their use of 1080. Yes it was invented in 1920s as an insecticide. It kills insects, it kills birds, it kills animals. So DOC is dropping over thousands of hectares of our public lands, an ecosystem poison. MDC allows them to do so. Whose responsibilty? I say its irresponsibility? Ken Lloyd Blenheim

Photos inspire A photograph is created out of purpose. A purpose to share with others the beauty of people and the world around us, so it’s no surprise that local woman Rachel Marfell is taking her passion for photography further. Reporter Celeste Lodewyk finds out more.

Rachel is one of six photographers who are currently exhibiting their work in an exhibition titled ‘Through the Lens’ at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Art Gallery. At exhibition opening last Friday evening, the subject debating whether photography was considered an art form was raised. Looking through the images hung on the gallery’s walls, it was evident to those viewing them, that those photographs were the end product of a series of creative choices including composition, lighting, colour… choices similarly made when creating art in other forms. For Rachel, photography is not just an art form, it is a form of interpretation. “Anything that inspires me or captures my interest I photograph. “It can be a flower that has just burst in my garden, or the sun setting over the African landscape,” she says. Rachel grew up in the Pelorus Sounds taking correspondence school lessons,

playing on the beach and creating ‘secret gardens’ in the surrounding bush. Her love for the outdoors has been a strong influence in the majority of her photography, as depicted in a large image taken of waves moving across the sea’s surface, which sits proudly in her kitchen. “It’s my calming picture,” she laughs. “I took that photo when sitting at the back of a boat and when I feel stressed I just look at that.” Interestingly, Rachel’s photography began as a hobby after her children left for boarding school, and has since grown into the beginnings of a business. “After my son and daughter left I was a bit lost,” she laughs. She spent many hours wandering about the property and vineyard she and husband Richard own with her camera in hand. “I began taking photos of flowers from my garden, landscapes, seascapes and whatever else inspired me when I was out

and about.” Rachel joined the Marlborough Camera Club, serving as president at one stage, and met many other like-minded photography enthusiasts. “This was where I really became inspired,” she says. The one place she says was ‘incredible’ to photograph was Africa. “What an amazing place. “We hired a driver and did a seven day safari and I was totally blown away. “The colours are so intense and the landscapes and animals are so beautiful. It’s a place I am looking forward to returning to,” she says. Until her next great photographic journey, Rachel is focusing on building her business RT Photography. A selection of Rachel’s images, along with other exhibiting photographers can be viewed at the gallery until February 15.

Pound hounds

The words ‘dog pound’ may sound scary or negative to some people, but when Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk visited the Marlborough District Council animal shelter on Monday, there were plenty of tails wagging. Maataa Waka animal control officer Rebecca Moorhouse and team leader Rebecca Payne were on hand to talk about their enjoyment for the work, as well as introduce one of the latest additions to the pound, Gem, a black labrador cross found wandering in Seddon last week.

The role of Maataa Waka animal control involves dealing with roaming dogs, attacks, registrations and sometimes even stock running loose on the road. While some people may see animal control officers as “the bad guys”, there is a lot of hard work, dedication and often heartache that goes with the job, Payne says. “Ninety five percent of the time we are dealing with people, the dogs are the easy part,” she laughs. “The best scenario is that we find a dog and can return it to its owner as soon as possible, but that’s not always the case. “We do everything we can to re-home them but if we can’t then they are euthanised, which is sad for us but it also reinforces how important it is to have your dog microchipped and registered,” she says. “I am shocking for getting attached to the dogs,”

adds Moorhouse. “Because I am so hands-on with the dogs it can be hard when you have to take them to the vet to be euthanised, but there are also some really happy stories of dogs finding new homes that reminds me why I am doing this. “I really love coming to work everyday, I love seeing their faces and when they come running up for pats and attentions it just makes it all worth it,” she smiles. Asked what was their most memorable dog, they both grinned and replied “Scooter”. “Scooter was a Bichon Frise that was found dumped at the Wairau River. It turned out that the dog had been reported stolen from Christchurch in January 2014 and we were able to reunite it with its owner just before Christmas.” For the dogs whose owners can’t be contacted, photographs are put onto the ‘Pound Hounds’ Facebook page, where dogs needing new homes are also advertised. “The way social media is going, we knew that this would be another great way to advertise the dogs and so far we have had a good response,” they say. Others sometimes go to the Marlborough SPCA if there is room as well as to the Second Chance dogs and Furever Homes organisations. “We try everything we can.” For more information about Pound Hounds Marlborough, refer to their Facebook page.

New year - be prepared Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The beginning of a new year is a good time to prepare for emergencies, says Marlborough Emergency Management officer Gary Spence. “With people finishing their summer break and gearing up for the new work and school year, now is an opportunity to make sure your family has an emergency plan, a kit that’s easily accessible and if you can, establish a neighbourhood support group. “It’s something we keep talking about all year round, but the importance never lessens. If something was to happen such as an earthquake, flood or power outage then your family needs to know what to do.” Gary says he understands there are families in the community struggling with finances and that expecting them to have a kit would be “unreasonable”. “If you are starting from scratch they aren’t cheap, the average kit costs around $100 to set up. “But if you can identify things in your home that can be used in an emergency situation that’s a great start toward being prepared,” he says. Items such as extra blankets, a spare torch, a box of matches, spare tinned food, a barbecue, a length of rope and a piece of tarpaulin are just some of the things people may find around the home. Gary’s advice is to pull them out and put them in a place where you can get to them easily. He also reminds people that the Neighbourhood Support Group is one of the best tools a community can have to stay connected and help one another in an emergency. “Know who in your street has kids, who is vulnerable,

Marlborough Emergency Management officer Gary Spence with an example of an emergency kit.

who has extra food and water and put these resources together. It’s the best way to get through an event,” he says. Anyone wanting to find out more about becoming a Neighbourhood Support co-ordinator for their street can contact the Marlborough District Council. • Plan as a family where your meeting point would be. • Use empty fizzy or juice bottles to store water. Do not use milk containers.

Enrol to upskill Thinking of study options or upskilling in the New Year? Blenheim-based Koru Institute of Training and Education Ltd (KITE) is taking enrolments as of January 19 for its February and March intakes. What makes KITE unique is its ability to offer free tertiary courses to students wanting to upskill or transition to new work, while also using its charitable status to provide funding and support for countless community groups, chief executive Monique Gemmell says. “The Maori values governing the institute create an effective working dynamic, where students and teachers are treated like family which make continuing education less daunting,” she says.

Last year KITE had over 300 students studying full and part time courses such as computing, business administration, te reo, social services and Treaty of Waitangi training. This was a welcome change for students who attended last year, enjoying all the comforts and amenities at their disposal. For more information, contact KITE or call in and see one of the friendly team at 5 Sutherland Terrace, Blenheim.

Did you get a puppy for Christmas? Important things to think about...

Keep your puppy’s environment safe. Puppies are naturally curious. Provide a safe area for your puppy to play. A securely fenced area is essential.

All puppies over 3 months old must be registered and microchipped. Neutering your puppy can help prevent the increasing number of unwanted dogs put down every year. Talk to your local vet or Animal Control.

Pet your puppy often. It is important to stroke your pet’s body, legs and head several times daily. This helps create a strong bond with your puppy.

Make sure your puppy gets plenty of exercise. Give your puppy about an hour of walk time a day broken into 2 - 4 walks. Please Note: Before your puppy interacts with other dogs. Make sure your puppy has had the required vaccinations.

Teach your puppy basic commands. Your puppy will be able to learn most commands while they are young. Teach your puppy to sit, to come, to stay and to lie down. Basic commands is a good basis for more complicated tricks later.

Early socialisation of puppies is essential. Consider attending puppy training courses. With appropriate training and time a puppy will become a well mannered dog.

Gutter Sucker If you dread the thought of climbing a ladder to clean your home’s guttering, don’t risk falling and injuring yourself call in the Gutter Sucker team. Owned by Pete Halligan and operated throughout Marlborough by Dean Marshall, Gutter Sucker is the clean, easy and safe way to clean blocked guttering. Using specialised equipment that does the job easily and efficiently, Dean can remove all gutter debris from any size home. “The amount of accidents that occur with people falling from ladders is high, so don’t risk being injured and call us

in,” he says. As well as guttering, Dean can also clean exterior windows and outside cladding as well as pavements and driveways. “I use a high powered waterblaster that has rotating jets. This machine gives a great result. “For windows, I use a specialised water system that is chemical free and leaves a streak free finish,” he says. Now is a great time to have your gutters, windows and home’s exterior cleaned from top to toe, so for an efficient and friendly service call Dean.

Dean Marshall.

Marlborough Mobile Locksmith It’s not uncommon for locksmith specialist Ted Ellens to receive calls for keys locked in a car, lock repairs in houses or complete new installations. But the biggest asset to his business, he says, is his friendly customer service. “It’s the service that people remember, and it goes a long way.” Ted is the director and operator of Marlborough Mobile Locksmith. He says one thing that customers appreciate is his 24 hour, seven day service. “Lost keys, broken locks - even being called out to jump start a vehicle in the middle of the night is all part of the job,”

17

he says. Marlborough Mobile Locksmith specialises in the repair, replacement and upgrade of locks for cars, homes, boats and businesses. You name it, Ted can probably make a key to fit it. “I often get calls to make keys for locks in old china cabinets and cupboards. I have even had people leave their boat keys at home in Christchurch and need a new one cut here. The next time you find yourself in need of a locksmith, call Marlborough Mobile Locksmith.

Ted Ellens.

Relentless rowers By Adam Poulopoulos The Blenheim Rowing Club’s under-19 men’s squad led the way for Marlborough at last weekend’s South Island Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel. The squad walked away with six gold medals from the meet - in the under-17 single, coxed quad, coxed four and eight, and the under-19 coxed four and eight. Coach Bill Campbell says the results were continuing a proud tradition. “We’ve always done reasonably well at age-group level, and we’ve had some pretty good rowers from the college. “It’s probably been normal for us to pick up five or six titles at the South Island club champs.” He says although he has coached other strong crews in the past, he was excited about this crop. “We hadn’t really raced (before

McMath to compete for South Island By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim Swimming Club’s Sally McMath has been named in the Southern Makos squad to compete at the 2015 Zonal Champs in Auckland on Sunday. It is the 17-year-old McMath’s first call-up to the squad. The team is taken from swim clubs around the South Island. The Marlborough Girls’ College student will be competing in the senior women’s division. She is one of 10 Southern Makos senior women aged 16 years and over in the squad.

Sally McMath. McMath, who set seven different Nelson/Marlborough records at the recent Wellington Long

Course Summer Championships, says it is the biggest meet she has been picked for so far. “I was pretty surprised really. I wasn’t expecting to be selected. “It’s such a good opportunity and good for experience.” McMath is unsure which events she will be competing in at the meet. Her swims will accrue points for her team’s total. She has already qualified for this year’s Australian age-group championships in the 200 metres backstroke and 100m butterfly, but will attempt to meet more

Absolute Wilderness to return The Absolute Wilderness multisport team is back to compete in this year’s GODZone endurance event. Attracting competitors from around the world, the course remains secret until a few hours before the race. The winning team can expect to complete the race in three or four days.
